DANIEL Lloyd (AM Post/Sean Kelly) did his Olympic selection aspirations no harm with a fine fourth place at the 2008 British Road Race championship in North Yorkshire.

After his second place last year to David Millar and his win earlier in the season at the tough five-day Vuelta Extremadura, Lloyd now has wait out until next Friday to find out the decision of the British Cycling selection panel.

The event was won by Rob Hayles (Halfords/Bikehut) who has virtually guaranteed himself a place at Beijing.

Of the race Lloyd said: "I tried a couple of times to get away on my own in the final 5km, but it just didn't work out, and when Rob made his final race winning move I had just been caught, so didn't really have anything left."

PICKERING TAKES THIRD

DAVE Pickering (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) was the best local rider at the Wessex RC 50-mile time trial recording a time of 1:58:07 to take third place overall behind event winner Russell Kober (DH Cyclesport).

Pickering was joined by team-mate Rebecca Evans who took the ladies prize recording a creditable 02:13:58 which also gave her 20th position overall.

The South District under-16s 10-mile competition was also held locally with George Lockyer (Bournemouth Arrow CC) taking third place with Lauren Barber (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) the first girl home in seventh position.

VICTORY FOR WILL

FORMER semi-professional Will O'Callaghan (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) took the eighth event in the Moreton Village Evening Cycle Racing Series pulling away from Paul Hopkins (Poole Wheelers) and Luke Gray (Hargroves) in the final dash for the line.

In fourth place was Barry Clewett (Bournemouth Arrow CC) who edged ahead of last year's overall victor Roland Tilley (Ride Bike) who is now looking strong after a slow start to the season after winning the veterans Independence Road Race on Sunday.
