PLANS are progressing for a brand-new wine shop to open in Christchurch.

Majestic Wine has been granted a premises licence for its 'future store' in Saxon Square.

The major wine retailer had submitted a request for off sales of alcohol between 8am and 11pm Monday to Sunday.

As reported, Majestic Wine already has planning permission to adapt a building that forms part of Saxon Square.

The building is already home to a number of shops and offices, but the approved scheme will allow for a new retail unit and shop front to be formed there.

Once open, Majestic Wine would face towards Fountain Roundabout and be accessed from Milhams Street North via steps and ramps.

A small parking area is also included in the scheme, located east of the unit, comprising of seven spaces, and one disabled space.

The company is now requesting illuminated shop signage to complete the frontage of the new store.

It has now submitted a new planning application detailing signs across the front, walls and windows, as well as direction signs nearby.

A heritage statement has been submitted as part of the application, with the site fronting the Christchurch Central Conservation Area.

It reads: "The proposal for illuminated signs to fascia and walls to the North and East elevation, totem and direction sign does not have any detrimental aesthetic effect on either the character of the Conservation Area, any listed buildings or their setting in the vicinity.

"The proposed development will not cause loss, decay or detrimentally affect any heritage assets."

A decision is yet to be made on the application.

Majestic Wine already has more than 200 stores across the UK but wants to open at another 70 locations as part of ambitious expansion plans.

The company’s CEO John Colley had previously said he believed the Saxon Square building to be a “perfect fit for Majestic”.

He added: “We are excited about the prospect of bringing our market-leading proposition to Christchurch, and helping new customers enjoy the Majestic experience with our qualified experts and award-winning wines.”

The Daily Echo has approached Majestic Wine to ask about potential opening dates for the new store.
