A RESTAURANT in Christchurch has unveiled plans for a revamp to improve its views of the seaside.

The owners of the Noisy Lobster at Avon Beach want to make a number of internal and external changes to the popular restaurant.

These include creating a bigger first floor terrace with larger windows, and an extension to, as well as partial demolition of, the ground floor.

Internal ‘re-configurations’ are also proposed through the restaurant, and the ground floor entrance would be altered to “improve the aesthetics of the building”.

The Noisy Lobster owners say the changes will improve the overall layout, flow and accessibility of the restaurant, and create better views of shoreline approximately 20m away.

However, the new design would see the number of covers inside and out the building being reduced from 253 to 235.

A planning application has been submitted by Noisy Lobster Ltd to request permission for the refurbishment.

A spokesperson for the company said: “‘We are very proud to submit the latest planning application investing further into Avon Beach, specifically The Noisy Lobster Restaurant.

“The application improves the layout of the restaurant. Providing larger windows on the first floor for customers to enjoy the fabulous scenery of the bay.

"The application actually reduces the total restaurant covers, however, the table locations and views will be very much improved.”

Suggested benefits to the scheme are included in a Design and Access statement submitted as part of the planning application.

It reads: “The internal reconfigurations will improve the flow and accessibility of the restaurant.

“Although losing covers, the restaurant will be able to provide more desireable table locations for customers to enjoy the sea views.

“The alterations to the entrance will improve disabled access whilst also providing shelter for customers waiting to be seated in inclement weather.

“The alterations to the first floor dormers will create more front of house space for customers, whilst the ground floor extension allows the dining space to be reoptimised and facilitates a larger first floor terrace.”

The restaurant owners add that the design gives “careful consideration” to the impact on Avon Beach neighbours.

A decision is yet to be made on the planning application.
