NATIONAL bakery chain Greggs is getting closer to opening a new site at a Poole retail park.

Fresh planning applications have been approved for Greggs to move into the former Carphone Warehouse unit in the Wessex Gate Retail Park.

When open, it is expected to be one of the largest Greggs units in the UK with around 285 square metres in space.

While the scheme was approved in October last year, BCP Council recently showed the green light for an application to install five air conditioning condenser units and fixed outside seating for the site.

No objections were lobbied at the newest application, which was approved by planning officers on July 10.

The report said: “The seating arrangements and barriers are a permanent fixing and would not be moveable each day, they will remain a feature within the development.

“There are a number of other restaurants within the retail park that offer external seating so the proposed development would not be out of keeping within the immediate vicinity.”

Despite the confirmation, Greggs has remained tight-lipped about the scheme.

A spokesperson said: “Greggs is always looking into new shop locations, while we are unable to confirm anything at the moment, we will be sure to share any information in due course.”

The former Carphone Warehouse unit has been empty since 2020 when the firm relocated into the Currys unit at Wessex Gate Retail Park.
