PEDAL car glory is the aim of the game as a town’s much-loved grand prix event makes its return.

The British Pedal Car Grand Prix event in Ringwood will see more 37 racing cars zoom around the town centre circuit for a two-hour test of endurance and engineering.

Being held this year on Sunday, July 16, the grand prix event celebrates its 36th year since it was first run in Ringwood back in 1987.

Competing pedal cars will assemble in The Furlong shopping centre from 10am and are displayed there until the parade laps at 2.30pm, with the race starting at 3pm.

Spectators are able to walk around the whole course to watch the race from various vantage points.

Last year’s event, which was the first to be held since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, was won by Team Apollo – who are set to race again this year.

A spokesperson for the event said: “The whole emphasis of the event is to have fun. The pedal cars vary greatly in design with some very light and aerodynamic competitive cars, whilst others are built to amuse the crowds.

“Each car has a team of up to four pedallers who can change over as many times as they like, which makes pit lane viewing very interesting for the spectators.

“The event also raises sponsorship money that is then donated to various charities decided by pedal car committee.”

In previous years, teams have travelled from the likes of Bristol, Chippenham and even Germany to take part in the race.

Once the chequered flag is waved at 5pm, an afterparty will take place in Ringwood Market Place where visitors can enjoy live music, street food and drinks from various vendors.
