The incident also gave Purbeck Police the opportunity to deploy their Yamaha Rhino ATV (nicknamed Rowena) a small off-road quadbike, to transport medical kit to the incident.

Two lifeboats from Swanage RNLI, the ambulance service and their air ambulance attended, and the man was taken to hospital.

A spokesman for the RNLI said: "Both Swanage's lifeboats were requested to launch as part of a multi-agency response to assist an injured male who was believed to have fallen and sustained an injury.

"The lifeboats launched and were on scene 10 minutes later. On arrival they found that the Dorset & Somerset air ambulance had been able to land on Dancing Ledge and their medics were attending the casualty.

"Two ILB crew went ashore to see if any further assistance was required.

"They assisted carrying the casualty to the helicopter and once this was done both lifeboats were released to return to station."
