A WOMAN has been left with sleepless nights because of a manhole cover which has a “loud bang” when cars go over it.

Rebekah Shelton has had to put with the sound of a loose manhole cover outside her property in Commercial Road, Ashley Cross for more than a month.

The 37-year-old said the noise is so frequent she is demanding the council and Wessex Water, which she claims is not taking her problem seriously, should fix the problem.

She said: “It’s very busy here and every time a car drives by, which can be every five seconds depending on the time of the day, there are always loud bangs.

“I wake up regularly throughout the night and I have even thought about putting a cone around it but then if I do that and there is a serious crash, I will be done for manslaughter and put in prison.

“This is the first property I have bought and I cannot even open the windows because it means the noise is louder.

“My cat is deaf, so luckily it isn’t affecting her sleep.”

Rebekah, originally from Brazil, said the problem has been ongoing for more than a month and it is affecting her mental health.

“I am very annoyed because when we have to pay our council tax we have to pay for it on time or there will be consequences,” she said.

“We work very hard and pay our tax and do our bit but the council does not do anything about it.

“It is affecting my mental health and I am feeling anxious. It has been impossible to work when there are bangs happening all the time.

“I have reported this so many times to the council but they are not repairing it and I don’t understand why.

“Nothing has been done by them and they say they will investigate the case but they are not doing.”

The manhole cover is a matter to be dealt with by Wessex Water, according to a BCP Council spokesman.

He said: “The cover was reported to Wessex Water, who are due to undertake works on June 19”

A spokesman for Wessex Water said: “We’re sorry for any disturbance caused by our manhole cover in Commercial Road, which will be repaired on 19 June.

“A lane closure will be in place while work is being carried out, with no interruption to customers’ water or sewerage services.”
