E-SCOOTERS will be banned on South Western Railway trains from next month.

The network said this move was due to the ‘fire risk’ posed by scooters.

SWR is the latest train operator to ban scooters from its trains joining a host of other operators to make the move.

Cross Country does not allow e-scooters on its trains.

South Eastern Railway and Thameslink Railway are also banning them from June 1.

Great Western Railway banned the two-wheeled transport on May 1 saying there had been ‘a number of incidents’ where ‘lithium-ion batteries in e-Scooters have been associated with severe overheating, increasing the risk of fire.’

The company added that e-scooters are not currently regulated and so are ‘not required to meet minimum safety standards for vehicles.’

E-scooters are ‘only permitted by the discretion’ of the rail companies under the National Rail Conditions of Travel.

Jane Lupson, SWR’s head of safety, said: “Reports of incidents involving e-scooters catching fire on National Rail services or infrastructure are increasing and the potential risk that they pose is not acceptable to our customers and colleagues.

“After some consideration, and in line with other partners in the rail industry, we will be banning e-scooters on our trains and at our stations from Thursday 1 June.

“We understand that these devices are popular, but the safety of our customers and staff is our number one priority, so until greater regulation and testing can be brought in to ensure the safety of those travelling on trains, e-scooters will remain banned.”

SWR reminded passengers what they are able to bring onto their trains, including bicycles, bags and luggage and prams.

Pets are also allowed on SWR trains for free of charge, with up to two dogs allowed on, provided they are kept on a lead. Smaller animals must be kept in a pet carrier.
