A DECORATED police officer from Dorset has been specially chosen to take part in the coronation of King Charles III.

PC Jim Perks will be joining a contingent of officers representing police forces from around the country as they line the ceremonial route on May 6.

A frontline response officer in Dorset since 2007, PC Perks previously served in the RAF for 22 years and was awarded several medals for long service and good conduct.

In 2017, he was awarded a Commander’s Commendation for saving the life of a young girl who had jumped into the sea with a weighted rucksack. With no hesitation, PC Perks entered the water and prevented her from drowning.

Ahead of the coronation, PC Perks said: “I’ve spent most of my career serving Queen and country, so it’s an immense honour to be part of His Majesty’s coronation. It’s not often you get a chance to be part of such a historic occasion and I expect my family will be watching at home, hoping to catch a glimpse of me in the crowd.”

Dorset Police’s assistant Chief Constable, Steve Lyne, said: “Jim is a shining example of professional service. Over his years with Dorset Police he’s been a leader and mentor to many student officers. He’s an excellent officer and we’re proud to have him representing us. I expect he’ll come away with many memories to treasure.”

As well as PC Perks, Dorset Police is sending various officers to London for the event as part of a wider mutual aid operation. They will include specialists from the firearms, roads and dog handling teams.

ACC Lyne continued: “This will be a significant occasion for UK policing and we’re happy to help our colleagues in London deal with what is expected to be the biggest public event of the year.

“Our officers will play their part in ensuring the safety of everyone there. I hope everyone who attends, including our officers, comes back with many happy memories of a momentous occasion.”

PC Perks has worked across Dorset Police, including stints in Christchurch and east Dorset.
