A PROPOSAL to build flats at a clifftop location in Highcliffe has faced backlash from residents.

A planning application has been submitted to build a three/four-storey block of 23 apartments in Wharncliffe Road.

The proposed development would provide a mix of one, two and three bed apartments, with space made for associated parking, and bin and cycle stores.

It is earmarked to sit across the plots of 31 and 33 Wharncliffe Road, seeing two existing residential buildings demolished to make space.

The application by Bury and Knight Ltd has already faced multiple objections from residents living in Wharncliffe Road and the surrounding areas.

Concerns have been raised over the scale of the development, the additional traffic it could bring to the area and its ‘out of keeping’ appearance.

However, in a document submitted as part of the application, the developer says the proposal has been “conceived through a great understanding of the site” and it will “neither harm neighbouring properties nor the character of the area.”

The Design and Access Statement reads: “The proposed building sits comfortably within the plot and is of a scale that is balanced in relation to the surroundings.

“It is considered that the proposed building is well designed and utilizes quality materials. The proposed height, scale and mass are proportionate with the local context.

“The building responds to both the traditional and contemporary buildings around the site, and we believe will certainly be an improvement to the street scene.

“Through the considered design approach, the use of high-quality materials in conjunction with sustainable building strategies and proposed high grade landscaping, it is envisaged that the proposed development will not only benefit the new occupants, but also increase the value of adjacent properties.”

It is not the first time a developer has requested to build flats in Wharncliffe Road, with applications made for different sites along the street in 2010, 2013 and 2017. All were granted.

A decision is yet to be made on the latest application by Bury and Knight Ltd.
