TRIBUTES have been paid to a much-loved Bournemouth comedian who has died after a car crash.

Gareth Richards, known for his work on the UK comedy circuit, died on Good Friday – almost two weeks after sustaining “serious brain injuries” in a crash on Monday, March 27.

The comedian, who formerly co-hosted Frank Skinner’s Absolute Radio show, was 41 years old and a father to sons.

His wife, Laura, broke the news on social media resulting in an outpouring of support and condolences from friends and colleagues.

She said: “He was in a terrible car accident and sustained serious brain injuries.

“It was a miracle that he arrived at the hospital alive. Since then, the doctors and nurses have been incredible and have kept him in a stable and sedated condition.

“However, the latest scan revealed that the extent of the damage was so severe that they would have to remove all of the supportive medications and allow him to be at peace.

“At the moment the grief is a lot to cope with. Thank you all for your support and kindness.”

On Saturday, an emotional Frank Skinner attempted to hold back tears during the closing moments of his radio show when telling listeners what had happened to his former co-host – describing him as a “fantastic bloke”.

Following his death, numerous tributes have poured onto social media for Gareth Richards – who lived in Bournemouth with his wife and children.

Fellow comedian Angela Barnes said: “The news we’ve all been dreading has come that Gareth Richards has left us. He was so funny and, above all, so kind and gentle. Love and strength to his family and friends and his comedy family who are all reeling from this.”

Chris Martin tweeted: “Awful to hear about Gareth Richards’ passing. Like many he started stand up when I did and was so funny and quirky from the get go. What a talent and what a man. Truly one of the kindest, most gentle and sweetest people you're ever likely to meet. My love and thoughts with his family.”
