A CAR parked on the side of a major dual carriageway and the driver reportedly got an Uber home, according to the police.

Officers from Hampshire Constabulary’s Road Policing Unit came across a Land Rover Discovery parked on the outside lane of the A31, westbound at Minstead, shortly after the M27 ends.

Tailbacks lasting around 25 minutes were reported on the dual carriageway and the motorway as police officers organised recovery for the abandoned Land Rover.

Police say the driver got an Uber home instead and that a prosecution is heading his or her way.

The incident happened at around 7am on Thursday, March 16.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Roads Policing Unit said: “If you are delayed heading west on the A31 this morning, this is why... the owner thought it would be a good idea to leave it in lane two and get an Uber home.

“Needless to say, prosecution heading their way.”

The Highway Code states vehicles must not stop on dual carriageways, such as the A31, unless told so by the police.

It says: “You MUST NOT stop on any carriageway, emergency area, hard shoulder, slip road, central reservation or verge except in an emergency, or when told to do so by the police, traffic officers, an emergency sign or by red flashing light signals.

“Do not stop on any part of a motorway to make or receive mobile telephone calls, except in an emergency.”
