MORE than 700 homes were left without electricity after a swan struck a power line in an area of Christchurch.

Energy company SSE was alerted to a power cut across 738 properties in Burton shortly after 6.30pm on Wednesday, March 8.

It was later discovered that a swan had flown into an overhead power line, causing a blackout in the area.

While 715 of the homes had their supplies back in less than an hour, 23 were left without power until 11.45pm that night.

A spokesperson from SSE said: “We would like to apologise to our customers who were affected by this power cut and assure them our engineers did all they could to restore supplies as safely and as quickly as possible.”

Customers who had contacted the company to report a power cut were sent a follow-up message on March 10 with information on its cause.
