ROADWORKS on the main road into Bournemouth remain on schedule after the first week of work.

A contraflow system was put in place on the A338 Wessex Way last week, as “essential work” is carried out on the Braidley Road overbridge.

This contraflow has been removed to reopen the road over the weekend between Bournemouth West Roundabout and St Pauls Roundabout, as planned. A changed contraflow will be reinstalled on Sunday, as work progresses onto the second phase.

A speed limit drop from 40mph to 30mph has also been introduced through the contraflow.

Bournemouth Echo:

Last week, two expansion joints were installed on the overbridge on the eastbound carriageway, one at either end of the bridge, with closures to the eastbound on and off slips at the Richmond Hill interchange.

Next week, the on slip eastbound closure will remain in place, and the off and on slips for the westbound carriageway at Richmond Hill will also be closed.

The road will then reopen again next weekend, March 18 and 19, before the final phase of work.

Meanwhile, there will be additional night time closures next week to the Wessex Way for litter picking and grass cutting, between Wednesday, March 15 and Friday, March 17.

Bournemouth Echo:

The first night of work will see the road closed between County Gates and St Pauls Roundabout, on both sides of the carriageway, and on the eastbound carriageway only between St Pauls Roundabout and Springbourne Roundabout.

Closures on this first night of work will be in place between 8.30pm on Wednesday, March 15 and 5am on Thursday, March 16.

The road will be closed between Cooper Dene Roundabout and Springbourne Roundabout on the second night of work, on both carriageways. The westbound carriageway between St Pauls Roundabout and Springbourne Roundabout will be closed, too.

As on the previous night, closures for the second night of work will be in place between 8.30pm on Thursday, March 16 and 5am on Friday, March 17.

A BCP Council spokesperson said: “Works will be taking place at night to minimise disruption and signed diversion routes will be in place. We would advise people to please plan ahead and allow extra time for their journey during these essential night time maintenance works.”
