A dozen charities in Christchurch joined forces to protect their town’s carnival.
The Highcliffe Brownies, with a lavish Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs float, won first prize among the many tableaux on display.
A colourful cavalcade of more than 20 floats and walking participants marched through the sunlit streets of Christchurch in front of thousands of spectators.
A guillotine was trailed behind a 13-seater pedal cycle designed by Christchurch Lions Club to celebrate Bastille Day. The club came second.
A magnificent Viking longship from Highcliffe Cubs pillaged third place.
All the while the procession marched to the beat of the bands of the 1st Christchurch Boys’ Brigade and the Girls’ Brigade.
The procession on July 14, 1979, was hailed as one of the best since the carnival was revived six years previously after a lapse of almost 15 years.
