A BUSINESSMAN is appealing for donations before he travels to Turkey to help in the recovery from the earthquake.

Ty Temel, who owns the Bournemouth nightclub Halo, said he is hoping to fly to the affected areas by the end of the month, to join his father and cousins.

Ty’s father, who lives in Swanage, was in Adana visiting his brother when the earthquake hit, around 200km (124 miles) from the epicentre of the second quake.

Mr Temel wanted to fly out immediately to help, but his father told him that they needed trained rescue teams, and that he and his friends would “get in the way” of the immediate relief efforts.

“He said wait a couple of weeks, let them finish what their job is, then come out,” Mr Temel said.

“I said 'OK dad, but I want to raise some money, I want to do something, what can I do?'

Bournemouth Echo:

Mr Temel's father has been speaking to people at the scene, and finding out where his son can best focus his efforts.

They have been in touch with a non-profit organisation, Ahbap, which is providing containers to begin the rebuilding phase after the earthquake.

“These containers, when they land on the ground, they’ll be used for various things, some will be created into homes, with stoves in, some will created into schools, because there are no schools, some will be created into elderly care homes, and other kind of services like that,” said Mr Temel.

“What my dad’s saying is that they are generally well clothed and well fed. But they just have no base. They have no home; they have no way of rebuilding.

“These containers will give them the ability to have some form of normality, in a sense, where they can have a home to live in, at least.”

Mr Temel will be raising as much as he can, before flying out. He will then assess where best to direct the money raised.

“When I get out there, I’m going to physically go and see the containers that have been made, and where they’ve been delivered and what effect they are having,” he said.

“Then, I'll either give the whole lot to the guys making these containers, or when I get out there, if I feel that there’s already a lot of them and that they only need X amount and the rest can go on something that’s probably more beneficial, I’ll take a view on that.”

Mr Temel will be keeping those who have donated updated on where their money is going, through his social media.
