AN AIRCRAFT museum which is "getting cramped" has applied for an extension.
Bournemouth Aviation Museum has submitted an application to extend its outdoor aircraft display area by around 25 per cent.
The museum, found off Parley Lane, is looking to expand into a section of land currently being used for shared car parking with Adventure Wonderland.
Their current display area has been described as “getting cramped” with the arrival of new aircraft.
The planning statement submitted to BCP Council features aerial photographs of the site 12 years apart to highlight how the aircraft has grown in numbers.
Bournemouth Aviation Museum says the expansion is not intended to attract “large numbers of new visitors”, only to give existing visitors more space when exploring the site. It would also allow the museum to move exhibitions and aircraft around more freely.
The planning statement reads: “The majority of the museum’s exhibits are kept outdoors, with the remainder housed in a run of Portacabins and containers located along its southern edge.
“The museum therefore has an open character, and the extension to the display area would continue this, with all exhibits being movable.”
The proposal does not involve the construction of any permanent buildings and structures, only changes to the existing fence.
It is also described as having very little visual impact on the surrounding area. The planning statement says: “An identical fence to the existing will enclose the additional area, and as such will have no additional impact; the fencing as it is entirely hidden from Parley Lane by existing boundary hedge.
“The fencing would be as per the existing, but moved back to outline the new boundary of the site and would have no greater impact on the Green Belt than the existing arrangement.
“The car parking area into which the display area would extend would simply be shifted to the eastern edge of the site.”
