BEACHFRONT decking is set to be approved for Branksome Chine as part of the multi-million-pound Rockwater Village development despite objections.

BCP Council planning officers have recommended Rockwater’s plans to erect a temporary decking area on the beach south of the Branksome Chine Cafe for a three-year period be given the green light.

This would complement the recently approved and currently under-construction Rockwater restaurant and bar complex at the former cafe site as a place for visitors to enjoy alfresco dining.

The decking plans, however, have been referred for discussion at BCP Council’s planning committee meeting on February 16 due to large opposition from residents – comprising 52 objections and two letters in support.

A temporary three-year consent for the beach decking is sought during peak summer months in order that the council can retain a degree of control over the impact of the proposal.

Rockwater says the decking will make “a positive contribution to the tourist offer in Branksome” and enable the restaurant to cater for a greater number of visitors.

Local critics of the plans say the provision for outside dining would generate noise pollution and ruin the “peaceful and tranquil” seafront.

Poole resident Martin Shaw said: “The decking would be an ugly and incongruous structure on a fine stretch of the open sandy coastline. This commercial enterprise would exclude the general public from enjoyment of the most accessible part of Branksome beach.”

The existing Rockwater complex in Hove also has an outside decking section which planners cite as a well-managed success.

In his reasons for recommending approval, planning officer Jedd Goodwin-Roberts said: “The proposal would provide an enhanced area for the cafe/restaurant which would enable it to expand its operation and provide an alternative seating area during the summer months, which would bring in significant economic benefits to the Branksome Chine beach area.

“The proposed living conditions of neighbouring properties have been carefully considered through the use of necessary and relevant planning conditions that can strike a balance between the appropriate use of the decking and achieving a neighbourly form of development.

“It is concluded that the scheme would achieve economic, social and environmental objectives of sustainable development.”
