A THEORETICAL revamp of Ringwood’s historic Market Place is gaining traction as part of a major neighbourhood plan.

Pre-submission draft documents for an extensive neighbourhood plan for Ringwood reveals audacious plans to strengthen the town as the “heart of civic, commercial and community life”.

During 2021 and 2022, numerous surveys and drop-in events hosted by the town council were conducted to gauge the views of residents on what they wanted for the town.

Several hundred gave their thoughts, with many defining a vision for a more vibrant town centre with character that stays alive in the evening, but respects the heritage of the area.

The project has also revealed how residents and business owners would like to see the town’s historic Market Place and high street used for more events and entertainment.

As such, proposals have been put forward which would see the area become more pedestrian and cycle friendly and to allow for restaurants and bars to ‘spill out’ into the space for outside dining.

It is understood such a development would not stop the town’s notable Wednesday market which has been held weekly since the Middle Ages.

The draft neighbourhood plan states: “By restoring the Market Place as the true heart of the town, it would also create opportunities to direct visitors to other parts of the town and the green spaces that Ringwood enjoys.

“We will mobilise its rich array of heritage assets, ambitious businesses, cultural and community organisations. We will revitalise the Market Place and High Street, establishing an inviting open-air space in the heart of the town.”

Evidence collated for the project indicates that Ringwood town centre has largely survived the national challenges facing retail in the last decade, maintaining relatively low unit vacancy rates.

Among those most excited by the vision is lifelong Ringwood resident Kim Hiett, who told the Echo: “After many years of seeing the Market Place sadly disappear, I couldn’t be happier to know that this proposed option is being considered.

“Ringwood is a wonderful town with lovely people and is surrounded by areas of beauty but we also need a vibrant high street that can survive these trying times.

“We have some wonderful independent shops and unique eateries with events going on throughout the year, however with this new dedicated space we would entice new businesses to open up and help increase footfall.

“High streets and markets are disappearing all over the country and we should not let this happen in Ringwood.”
