YET again news of the royal family fills our screens, commands the airwaves and generates acres of newsprint

The tradition that, by accident of birth, an individual is required to sacrifice his or her right to a normal life, to undertake the duties of head of state, doesn’t sit comfortably with me, and there is now overwhelming evidence that this arrangement is hugely damaging.

Isn’t it time we ended this questionable arrangement, allowed the royals a normal life, and arranged for the duties of head of state to be undertaken by an elected candidate?
