MUCH of Christchurch is at a standstill this afternoon as separate roadworks causes heavy traffic and delays.

Temporary four-way traffic lights are causing long delays at Iford Roundabout, particularly from the approach along Iford bridge with traffic backed up to Barrack Road.

SGN has installed the lights as they dig up part of the roundabout to fix a ‘major gas leak’ which cropped up yesterday.

A spokesman for the gas company said the were unsure when the work will be finished, adding: “We appreciate this is a sensitive route and thank road users in advance for their patience and understanding while we complete the required repairs.

"At this time, we’re unable to suggest how long it might take to permanently fix the leak on the affected pipe."

Meanwhile, further up along the A35 in Barrack Road, congestion continues to build thanks to another gas leak in the road.

Councillor Mike Cox said the closures highlight a “complete failure” to manage infrastructure in the town.

SGN said small businesses “who feel they have suffered a genuine loss of profit” could be entitled to compensation “depending on the circumstances”.

A spokesman added: “Our engineers are working to urgently fix a section of our network along the A35 Barrack Road, between its junctions with Stour Road and the Fountain Roundabout.

“It’s too early to say how long this essential repair work will take to complete. We appreciate roadworks can be frustrating and would like to thank road users for their understanding while we complete this essential work to ensure the Christchurch community continues to receive a safe and reliable supply of gas.”
