A police officer sent a stark warning to drivers to take care in freezing temperatures after a car crashed into a tree.

Police sergeant Matt Weldon warned motorists to slow down following the incident in West Moors.

Tweeting on Friday night, he said: "Temperatures across East Dorset are sitting just below freezing.

"One driver has already fallen foul of ice and collided with a tree near West Moors.

"Take extra care on the roads this evening, especially on untreated surfaces, slow down and #DriveToArrive."

The recent cold snap has seen temperatures plummet to -8C overnight in many areas in Dorset.

The frost and ice has left some roads extremely icy.

Councils have been gritting major routes throughout the past 10 days.

From Sunday, temperatures are due to increase as the weather gets milder.

A weather warning for heavy rain has been issued by the Met Officer from Sunday to Tuesday morning.

It is due to rain throughout Sunday and Monday with temperatures rising to 12C in some areas.
