PLANS for a block of more than 160 student flats in Bournemouth town centre have been tabled by a developer.

McClaren Property has put forward the scheme for 163 bedrooms on the former Westover Garage building in Hinton Road.

The proposal would see the demolition of the section of the site facing Hinton Road, with an eight-storey building put up in its place behind the former Westover Ice Rink premises.

A statement submitted in support of the application by WGP Architects said the scheme could act as a “catalyst to wider regeneration”.

“The benefits of the proposed redevelopment are numerous,” the statement said.

“Not only acting as an impetus to help improve the area, the proposals will also fulfil a demand within the borough for more quality student accommodation as well as creating employment opportunities and wider economic benefits for the area.

“Whilst there are many recent planning submission to redevelop and rejuvenate the area we know the scheme worked up is grounded in reality and stands the very best chance of being fulfilled – to do so would be a significant boost to turning around the fortunes of Hinton Road and bring much-needed life back to the street, making it busy and vibrant again.”

Bournemouth Echo:

The proposed development features 163 bedrooms in the form of 152 studios, nine twodios and two accessible studios.

On the ground floor there would be a gym, student lounge, laundry room and reception.

The lounge includes an area opening out to a courtyard garden.

McClaren Property has included plans for 178 internal bicycle parking spaces for residents.

There is no car parking included in the proposal, which is line with the council’s parking policies for developments in the town centre.

The firm held a public engagement event at St Peter’s Church in September. Invitations were sent to 436 households and 71 businesses although a total of 17 people attended.

The application is currently being assessed by BCP Council’s planning department. Residents have until January 6 to submit comments on the scheme.
