RESIDENTS in Poole have been left increasingly agitated at bright lights shining every night at the new Amazon warehouse.

Residents at houses and apartments on the opposite side of Holes Bay, in Hamworthy, have been complaining about bright, white LED lights which “look like a cruise liner”.

Amazon has said it will look into the lighting, which is coming from the five-storey car park for the new depot.

Hamworthy resident Alison Green said the view at night has been “spoiled” by the new Amazon warehouse’s lights.

She said: “It is horrendous. All the lights are left on at night across about five floors.

“Residents I have spoken to say they have had their lives have been ruined by this blot on the landscape because it is so bright.

“It’s an eyesore and all of us living on this side of the bay have had enough. Part of the reason I bought this house was because of the location and its views.

“Before we had just street lights shining and that was fine. But now it looks like a cruise liner.”

An Amazon spokesperson said: “We always strive to be a good neighbour and we’ll look into this matter.”

Based at Sterte Avenue West, Amazon’s new 10.70-acre site replaced the former parcel distribution warehouse at Hurn near Bournemouth Airport – where the company had “hit the ceiling” of capacity.

More than 300 people work daily at Amazon Poole, which opened on October 20, to deliver tens of thousands of parcels containing everything from computer monitors and bath lotions, to Lego City sets and Arsene Wenger’s autobiography.

Serving five counties – Dorset, Hampshire, Somerset, Wiltshire and Devon – the depot is the biggest along the south coast and one of the biggest nationwide.

The depot expects to see a 50 to 60 per cent increase in demand over the festive period.

It is hoped the site will welcome a new electric delivery fleet in 2023.

Earlier this month the Echo was exclusively invited to look around the new warehouse.

The tour revealed advanced technology such as robot arms for box tagging and illuminous panels indicating to staff exactly where certain boxes are stored.
