An area of Bournemouth town centre has been ignored in the town’s Christmas celebrations, according to the owners of new restaurant in the area.

The Nowokunski family, who own The Place in the triangle, have criticised BCP Council for focusing this year’s Christmas events “solely” on the Bournemouth Square.

Joanna, Dariusz and Simon Nowokunski all suggest that the arrival of festive markets and Christmas Tree Wonderland last week has drawn customers away from the triangle, having drastic impacts on their restaurant.

Simon said: “Last week, we had the worst week since we opened.

“We thought the Christmas markets would bring more, but everyone’s just concentrated in the Square, and people are just using the commercial businesses.

“It means we don’t get walk-ins anymore. We’re surviving off bookings now. We’re financially struggling.”

Joanna added: “The week before the whole Christmas festivities started, we had bookings, we were busy - we had the best week so far. It was really nice, the place had life, and everybody was loving it.

“But all of sudden, it was gone.”

The family feel that had more decorations, markets and events been organised for Christmas in the Triangle, the restaurant would be welcoming more walk-ins at a time it is needed most.

Joanna said: “The council say they say they support small businesses, but where’s the support for the small business?

"Where are the festivities? Where are the decorations? Do you see any decorations in the Triangle?

“They’re by the big businesses that are already established and have branches.”

The Daily Echo approached Councillor Beverley Dunlop, the portfolio holder for culture and vibrant places, with the businesses’ concerns. Cllr Dunlop said that this year’s Christmas celebrations in Bournemouth were “comparable to previous years”.

She added: “I’m sorry they feel that way.

“I want to assure people that we are committed to the triangle, no less than any other area of the town."

Councillor Philip Broadhead, portfolio holder for development, growth and regeneration, said: “This past year has seen more attention to the Triangle area than ever before - and we’re disappointed to hear this hasn’t been appreciated.

"From the incredible Artship Orchestra installation only a few months ago, to the extension of the Winter Wonderland trail up to the Triangle this Christmas - now offering an array of decorated trees, a romance arch and glittering swirls - we’d encourage anyone visiting Bournemouth to check out this brilliant, vibrant part of our town.”

The Nowokunski family are calling for tourists and residents to support small, independant businesses like theirs this winter, and are looking forward to sharing their new Christmas menu with customers.
