THE LIFT at Poole Library is still out of action three weeks after the library was officially reopened.

The library opened six months later than planned on Monday October, 24 following a year of being closed for refurbishments.

The site opened without a working lift, leaving wheelchair users and those with mobility problems unable to access it.

A Dolphin Centre spokesperson said they hoped to have the lift working within two weeks, however, on November 23 the lift was still closed.

A BCP Council spokesperson, said: “The Dolphin Centre management has confirmed that whilst commissioning work on the lift has started this will take some time to complete and the lift may not be available until the end of this week.

“Our customer services face to face offer will remain in Beech House until the lift becomes operational again. In the meantime, visitors who wish to access the library and need lift access are being supported by staff who escort them via the centre’s service lift.’’

A spokesperson from the Dolphin Centre said on November 23: “I can confirm the lift has now been refurbished but we are waiting to hear from the contractors on Friday with a confirmed commission date.

“This is a legal requirement and means the lift is unable to be used by the public until after it has been commissioned.

“The Dolphin Centre management team has pushed for this to be actioned sooner, but we have to rely on the contractor’s availability and schedule, meaning this is out of our hands.

“I will be able to confirm the commission date once this has been confirmed by the contractors.”

One user who went to the library on the day it opened, posted on social media to say she found the situation "ridiculous".

“I went to go to Poole Library today as it finally reopened after a year, and the lift to it is now out of action for at least three weeks, and I have been informed there is no alternative access by security.

“As a full-time wheelchair user I find it ridiculous that it was closed all that time and only now it's reopened the lift is now being done.”
