Scenes similar to the infamous 18th century battle of Mudeford Quay were reenacted when smugglers fought it out with revenue men over Channel Islands contraband on Christchurch recreation ground.

Around 40 children helped make hats, costumes, swords and makeshift boats for the 15-minute mock battle that took place on August 19, 1987.

The event, organised by the MSC-run community programme with the Forest Forge Theatre Company, drew large crowds.

Children’s entertainer Sandy Sinclair narrated over background music as children and adults fought it out for the booty – which in 1784 would have consisted of tea and Liquor brought over from the Channel Islands.
