CHERRIES booked their place in the fourth round of this season’s Carabao Cup after a 4-1 victory over Everton at Vitality Stadium.

Goals from Jamal Lowe, Junior Stanislas, Emi Marcondes and Jaidon Anthony ensured Gary O’Neil’s side got back to winning ways. Demarai Gray netted in the second half for the visitors.

The result means Cherries will be in the hat for the fourth-round draw, due to take place on Thursday.

On-loan centre-back Jack Stephens made his first senior start for Cherries, as they shuffled the pack for the visit of the Toffees, with nine changes in total.

Ben Pearson and Joe Rothwell were recalled, with Lowe leading the line up front for the hosts on his first start of the campaign.

Former Cherries stopper Asmir Begovic skippered the visitors on his return to Vitality Stadium.

But there was nothing the big Bosnian could do to prevent Cherries opening the scoring on eight minutes.

After a strong run from home skipper for the night Stanislas, he found Lowe on the edge of the box.

The former Swansea man tried his luck and after the ball ricocheted off James Garner, it fell into the net for his first goal since April.

Everton spurned a glorious opportunity to level a few minutes later. After Pearson gave the ball away in midfield, a through ball found the run of Everton midfielder Tom Davies, who blazed over the bar.

Frank Lampard’s side continued to attack. James Garner forced a finger-tip save from Mark Travers before a header from Anthony Gordon flew over when he was unchallenged from six yards out.

It only took Cherries two minutes to double their tally following the interval, in almost comical fashion.

After Begovic played the ball short to defender Mason Holgate, his slip allowed Ryan Christie to find Lowe.

And after the striker’s deflected ball across goal made its way to the back post, Stanislas was there to tap home his first goal since March 2021.

Cherries looked for a third. After the Toffees again gave away possession, Jaidon Anthony’s whipped effort to the near post was palmed away by Begovic.

There was a moment of concern for Cherries defender Chris Mepham just short of the hour mark as he stayed down with what looked like an injury – but the Wales international was able to run off the problem.

The hosts could have wrapped up the contest on 64 minutes. After Jordan Zemura burst down the left and sent a cross in, Lowe failed to keep down his free header.

Everton then pulled one back thanks to a moment of quality midway through the second period.

Forward Gray, who had come off the bench for the visitors, found room to turn away from Ryan Fredericks and curl into the top corner.

But just when it looked like nerves could creep in for the hosts, they added a third with 10 minutes remaining.

A neat one-two between Anthony and Siriki Dembele allowed the latter to square for Lowe. After Begovic initially saved from the striker, Marcondes was on hand to tap home.

The hosts soon added a fourth to wrap up the tie. After Dembele dispossessed Nathan Patterson, he teed up Anthony to slot into the bottom corner.
