Westbourne resident Ozan Karasüleymanoğlu was in his flat when the crash occurred and saw a “woman in pain” being treated by paramedics.

He told the Echo: “I was cooking at home when I heard the sirens, then I realised the ambulance and police were outside – it was so quick.

“I didn’t see the crash but the area was already crowded when I started to look.

“It’s an awful thing, but I was happy to see the ambulance get there so quickly.”

Pedestrians are able to pass through the closure via the pavement by The Westbourne pub and the West Cliff Baptist Church, while motorists face diversions in both directions.

Buses were forced to divert onto Alum Chine Road from Milburn Road, which caused heavy congestion on the local road network.
