PARKING has been banned in a residential road near a popular Christchurch beach.

A decision has been made to implement a year-round parking ban for Seaway Avenue in Friars Cliff.

The road currently has a single yellow line, allowing cars to park there at certain times throughout the year.

But new restrictions mean visitors will be forced to find somewhere else to park, whatever the time of year. Sections of Avon Run Road and Bure Lane will also be made into no parking zones.

According to BCP Council, these changes will help to provide safe parking, whilst improving the movement of traffic in the area.

The local authority added that the new regulations will help reduce the dangers for road users and will "facilitate improved passage" for cyclists, pedestrians and those with mobility issues.

A consultation had been launched by the council earlier this year, giving residents a chance to share their views on parking in the area.

This concluded on March 25, and a decision to approve new regulations was approved last month.

The consultation received an "overwhelming response", as reported earlier this year.

During the consultation, chairman of the Friars Cliff parking and road safety group Paul De Jonghe told the Daily Echo that the proposal will focus on ‘pinch points’ which cause the most issues in the area.

He said: “These pinch points are the points that cause congestion, traffic difficulties and poor access for emergency vehicles.

“What we’re doing will provide a dramatic road safety improvement.”

20 objections were received to the proposed order, and 180 responses in support.

BCP Council said that they have identified "no material negative impacts" in relation to the new restrictions, although there is a possibility that displaced motor vehicle traffic could "marginally increase".

They added that this is "not considered to outweigh the benefits to safe traffic movements" that the restrictions will provide.

Residents are expected to be welcoming of the parking restrictions, after frequently expressing concerns about ‘dangerous’ parking on their roads.

Speaking in March, one resident of Seaway Avenue said: “It’s got so much worse. I’ve been here 30 years and when I first came here it was manageable, there were still cars, but it wasn’t like this.

“It’s just madness.

“It shouldn’t be this hard to get into your own home.”

Visitors continue to have the option to park at BCP council car parks at Steamer Point, Southcliffe Road, Avon Run and Avon Beach.
