A DEVELOPER has submitted an application to redevelop a former candle factory site in Christchurch.

Burch Properties Ltd has outlined plans to build a one and a half storey residential home on the old candle factory site in Bank Close, off Christchurch High Street.

It would see the two existing buildings on the site demolished.

Both units are currently unoccupied but are said to have had ‘various uses’ over recent years, including public conveniences.

And despite many residents knowing the Bank Road site as the former candle factory, the developers have said there is “no documentary or physical evidence to point towards the buildings notional use as a candle factory”.

They added that it had been used as a temporary store for in the late 20th-early 21st century, and this is where the link to candles could’ve developed.

According to the heritage statement submitted to BCP Council, the proposals have been formed based on a “thorough understanding” of the “significance of the site”, as well as the “established character” in the area.

It reads: “The proposed development responds positively to the established character and appearance of the Christchurch Conservation Area and the desire to see development within Bank Close which has the potential to create better more active mixed-use frontages onto Bank Close and link with Druitt Gardens and other parts of the town centre.

“The development will preserve and enhance the character and appearance of this part of the Central Christchurch Conservation Area.”

The old candle factory site was first made available to buy, or let, in 2017.

At the time, Christchurch Borough Council said the site poses an opportunity at one of the 'gateways to the High Street'.

They added that a range of potential uses would be considered for the former candle factory site, subject to planning approvals.

Speaking in 2017, Ashley Harman, projects and estates manager at former Christchurch and East Dorset Councils, said: “This offers a great opportunity for someone looking for a property in a prime town centre location. Subject to planning permission, the site could be used for a range of ventures."
