Halloween’s origins go back 2,000 years ago to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain.
At the time, the United Kingdom and Northern France celebrated new year on November 1.
The day marked the end of the Summer and the harvesting period. They knew it was the beginning of the dark winter - a time in which the risk of death was far greater.
The Celts thought that on the eve of the new year the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred.
They celebrated Samhain on the night of October 31, as the ghosts of the dead returned to earth
