CHRISTCHURCH MP Sir Christopher Chope has hit out at his 'hysterical' colleagues in parliament, while expressing his disappointment with the prime minister over her mini-budget U-turn.

Fewer than 24 hours after Sir Chris had been on several television and radio shows defending the leader of the Conservative party, he said he listened to her today with "disbelief and despair".

Speaking to Sky News, he said: "She has my support although like most colleagues it is with disbelief and despair that I listened to her today.

"I supported her policies to increase growth and today at a stroke, she has abandoned those policies by increasing corporatation tax."

When asked if he still supported Ms Truss, Sir Chris said: "I think she is the only game in town.

"I’m not going to sign up with those hyenas in my party who want blood and another prime minster.

"I feel let down and that there would have been another alternative (to abandoning policies)."

He suggested freezing public expenditure in certain areas.

"I think the government has taken the soft option and imposed burdens on the productive sector of the economy."

"We need to rely upon Liz Truss to do her best.

"Let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water.

"She has got a good team and a new chancellor and he has some synergy with the prime minister.

"I would have hoped brining him in would have calmed the nerves of my more hysterical colleagues."
