AN ARTILLERY round discovered in waste at Somerley tip caused the facility to close for a period on Monday.

As reported, the Somerley Household Waste Recycling Centre was evacuated and closed yesterday (Monday, October 3) after the discovery of what was believed to be a piece of historic ordnance.

Hampshire Constabulary put a 100m cordon in place at the tip, which is situated off the B3081 Verwood Road, while trained officers carried out further enquiries.

A spokesperson for Hampshire County Council has since said: “Somerley Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) was closed for a short period yesterday morning following the discovery of part of an artillery round in the waste.

“As a precautionary measure, and to ensure public safety, the site was evacuated, with local residents signposted to the nearest alternative facility. The item has since been disposed of safely by Army experts and the site has reopened.

“Our HWRCs are not licensed to accept ammunitions or explosives, including fireworks and marine flares. This material is extremely hazardous and requires specialist disposal.

“Anyone seeking advice in this regard, is asked to contact the Police on the non-emergency 101, unless there is a danger to life, in which case call 999.”
