THE closure of one of the main routes through Christchurch for gas works will not finish as scheduled.

Barrack Road has been closed eastbound between the junction with Stour Road and Fountain Roundabout since Monday, September 26.

This has caused major traffic problems and delays in the town centre while SGN engineers carry out urgent repairs.

The work was due to be completed on Friday, September 30, however, the utility company has said this will not be met.

SGN spokesperson Bradley Barlow said: “Unfortunately, due to the complexity of this repair, we’ll need to continue working in Barrack Road over this weekend and into next week.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience this may cause to the local community and we hope to reopen the two eastbound lanes on Barrack Road as soon as possible.”

The Daily Echo has asked SGN to confirm when the firm expects the work to be completed. The spokesperson said it was too early to say at this stage.

As reported, the diversion route while the road is closed is via Stour Road and Bargates to get into the town centre.

Temporary traffic lights have been put in place in an attempt to mitigate delays at the junction of Stour Road and Bargates.

Engineers are working to fix a leaking main under the road where Barrack Road meets Fountain Roundabout.
