HUNDREDS of drivers use this roundabout - but nobody can explain one of its bizarre features.

The Daily Echo has been on a search for answers over mystery double yellow lines that sit on the inside of Tuckton Roundabout.

And despite them being repainted this year, no one seems to know why they were ever introduced.

Ward councillor Eddie Coope, who represents east Southbourne & Tuckton, did not know the reason for the double yellows and pointed out that the same lines ran along Tuckton bridge.

BCP Council also couldn't shed light on their purpose.

Their spokesperson said: “These lines are shown on the TRO map, so they are required to be in place. The recent refreshing of the lines has simply highlighted them to residents.

“We can only guess that perhaps originally there was an issue with drivers parking on the centre of roundabout.”

Determined to try and get some more information, the Daily Echo asked a number of residents and business owners in the area if they knew the reason behind the lines, - but most were just confused as we were.

One man having a coffee in a nearby café suggested the council “might have had some spare paint left over.”

The public were also asked if they’d ever seen any cars parking illegally on the roundabout, to which they all said no.

It isn’t the first time additions to Tuckton roundabout left people scratching their heads.

In 2018, raised parallel crossings with central islands for pedestrians and cyclists installed on each arm of the roundabout as part of a “safety improvement” scheme.

Bournemouth Borough Council said the roundabout had a "poor casualty record" and claimed the works would “reduce casualty collisions on the roundabout”.

They also said it would make it easier for pedestrians to cross the roundabout and improve facilities for cyclists.

But not all residents were impressed by the works, with one branding them a “disgraceful misuse of public funds”.

Speaking at the time, Southbourne resident John Cowan said: "The upheaval and disruption has been significant and the main result is worsened traffic congestion cause by the proximity of the pedestrian crossings to the roundabout, something that was obvious to the average man in the street, but not apparently to the council's highway engineers. Is anyone safer? I very much doubt it."
