A BOURNEMOUTH MP has said the government “stands with people and delivers active help”.

Bournemouth West MP Conor Burns defended the government’s mini budget in the wake of the pound dropping.

Mr Burns said: “The new prime minister has been very clear that her goal is to create a high growth economy.

“Growth creates jobs and grows taxes and allows the government to help those who need help the most.

“The financial markets are often volatile but settle quickly. We have shown by our response to the energy price rises in part caused by Putin’s war that we will stand with people and deliver active help.

“At the same time, we will incentivise growth and supply side reform. In my new role in International Trade, I look forward to helping companies locally unlock the opportunities of the free trade agreements we are able to do post Brexit.”

Earlier this week, the pound fell to its lowest level against the dollar since decimalisation in 1971 after the new chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, announced his mini-budget.

The IMF also said in a statement that the government’s policy will “likely increase inequality”.

It added: “We are closely monitoring recent economic developments in the UK and are engaged with the authorities.”

As reported yesterday, Poole’s MP Sir Robert Syms said the country may be “turbulent” right now but insisted “things will settle down”.

He added: “It’s an international situation because the Federal Reserve in the United States has been aggressively pushing up interest rates. All other currencies have been going through the floor.”

Mid-Dorset and North Poole MP, Michael Tomlinson said: “The chancellor has been clear that the announcements made on Friday are part of a long term plan that seeks to grow our economy.

"It is right that he has met with banking and financial representative to explain our new plan for Growth. The Chancellor is committed to fiscal sustainability, which is right. We need to grow our economy and everyone will benefit from a growing and larger economy.”
