THE teenage killers who murdered talented musician Edward Reeve in his own home can now be named.

Jack James Hindley, aged 17 and of Christchurch, and Samuel Roy Jones, aged 17 of Bournemouth, were convicted of Edward Reeve’s murder.

The two defendants had been anonymised in media reporting ever since they first appeared in court back in January.

However, following an application by the Daily Echo, the Honourable Mr Justice Sweeney lifted the order made under Section 45 of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999, which was made due the teens being under 18 years old and legally considered a juvenile.

Bournemouth Echo:

The order had prevented the publication of the boys’ names, addresses, identity of any school or educational establishment they attended, any place of work or a still or moving image of them.

The decision from the judge was made during a sentencing hearing at Winchester Crown Court on Wednesday, September 28, after written and oral submissions from the Daily Echo.

Announcing the judgment to allow the defendants to be named, Mr Justice Sweeney said that open reporting could have a “deterrent effect” on youth knife crime and attacks in the home which he said were “two areas of public concern”.

He added: “There is greater weight in open justice and unrestricted reporting than in the interests of these defendants.”
