A BROADCAST of the Queen’s funeral in Christchurch has allowed the community to ‘mourn together’.

Hundreds gathered at Christchurch Quay to watch Her Majesty the Queen’s state funeral on Monday.

A large screen had been put up on the Quomps, giving families and individuals a shared space to watch the monumental occasion.

The green quickly became packed with picnic blankets, camping chairs and Union Jack flags as events unfolded in London.

Christchurch resident Sue McCarron described the morning as ‘emotional but amazing’.

She said: "I feel very proud to be here. It’s lovely to be amongst other people for this.”

The feeling was shared by many mourners at the Quay, with some visibly upset, and others sharing hugs as the Queen’s coffin was brought into Westminster Abbey.

Some people also took time out to lay flowers at the nearby Christchurch Priory, adding to the already incredible display in the church grounds.

Although it was clear Christchurch had experienced a real loss, the town also showed great community spirit, and it was evident that its residents were truly thankful for Her Majesty the Queen.

Jane Bradley, from Christchurch, said: “The Queen has just always been there, so I wanted to mark this, and be there in some way.

“Wherever you’re a monarchist or not, she is a person of brilliance and a role model for the country.

"It was important for me to be a part of this history and do it as a shared experience- there’s loads of people here, young and old. It’s nice that we can share it with each other.”

Tara, who watched the funeral with her dog by her side, said: “Not everybody can make it to London. Coming here was a way of joining in with the community who want to do something for the Queen as well.

“I didn’t expect to feel how I do about it.”
