SCHOOLS in Dorset may have to close for a day if the teachers' strike goes ahead later this month.

The National Union of Teachers has called a strike over below inflation pay increases.

South West Regional secretary of the union Andy Woolley said: "We have about 1,500 members in Dorset and 500 in Bournemouth and the same amount in Poole. Nationally about half of all teachers are in the NUT.

"The schools' responses to the strike will vary in some schools we have a bigger percentage and some a smaller percentage of members. Some schools may close for the day and others may send some classes home.

"Some schools may not be seriously affected.

"We are definitely going ahead with the strike unless the government sees sense and says they will pay us in line with inflation."

On the day of the strike, April 24, teachers will hold a rally at the Town Hall in Dorchester.

According to the Department for Children, Schools and Families the teachers' pay award was recommended by the independent school Teachers Review Body.
