SOME 1,700 runners took part in this year's Bournemouth Bay Run on Sunday, which started from Bournemouth Pier.

There were a number of options including a 1K run for children, a half marathon, a 10K option and a 5K fun run.

The events brought out everyone from diehard athletes to children and runners in fancy dress Runners in the 10K and half marathon were chip-timed on the back of their running number, to ensure an accurate time between crossing the start and finish lines.

Andy Coles of the British Heart Foundation said: "We are really pleased with the turnout. We are on target we think to raise about £35,000 which will be a fantastic achievement. We are very thankful to all the runners for pledging their support."

Mr Coles said all ages had turned out and taken part, from toddlers upwards.

He added: "It is one of the best events we hold in the south west. It's going from strength to strength."

A council spokeswoman said 1,450 registered for the half marathon and 1,250 for the 10K. "It has gone really well. I think the weather has been a big factor. Everyone seems to have had fun."

Fitness First, which sponsored the race, led the warm up. The route began at Bournemouth Pier and took runners along the seafront and around Boscombe and Southbourne.
