PLANS are taking shape to transform an area nicknamed ‘boat graveyard’ by Poole Harbour into a play park facility.

An area of sand and green between Ballard Road and Harbourside Walk footpath just off Fisherman’s Dock has previously been described as “a blight on the landscape” with dozens of abandoned boats scattered on the land.

However, the land is also used by working fishermen and some residents claim the space is indicative of Poole’s old harbour town character.

In a public social media post, ward councillor Steve Baron told residents plans had been drawn up for the removal of abandoned boats for the benefit of existing fishermen on one side and a play park to be built on the other – maximising the space’s potential.

He said: “I’ve just had a very positive meeting with the PDFA (Poole & District Fisherman’s Association) regarding the nicknamed ‘Boat Graveyard’ at Fisherman’s Dock. Basically, for decades people have fly-tipped boats there which are no longer seaworthy and have little chance of being restored. The grassed area to the east has especially been problematic to them.

“Security has been an issue too, not only regards to theft, but also people’s safety around propped up boats and other activities necessary for fishermen to maintain and store their vessels.

“Notices will be put on abandoned boats giving the owners the opportunity to move their property. After this notice period is over, any remaining items will be disposed of.

“Currently we are working towards the possibility of the hard standing area to be fenced off and the area to the east becoming a small, tasteful pirate themed play park.

“Please appreciate that these are early days and there’s many things to overcome legally first. But that’s the idea, which I really feel would help the Poole fishermen keep Poole’s long-standing fishing tradition and help local families and visitors to our town.”

The Daily Echo contacted Cllr Baron to comment further on the plans.

The site is leased out to and managed by Poole District Fisherman's Association.

The group's chairman, Tom Russell, has previously said: "We have been in discussion with BCP Council over the last couple of years. They are going to help us have a clear out in exchange for the grassy area known as Wickes Field."
