A SPECIAL plaque to commemorate a former mayor of Christchurch’s 35 years dedicated to representing residents of the ancient borough is set to be unveiled.

Christchurch Town Council has organised for the plaque to be installed on the Quomps to serve as a permanent legacy to the work of Colin Bungey.

Colin passed away in April 2020 aged 79 having served the town as a councillor and many other roles across four decades.

Following a lot of residents asking what would be done to acknowledge his dedication to Christchurch, the town council arranged for the plaque to be put in place.

Colin’s wife Sue, who is a town councillor, told the Daily Echo: “For me and the family it is just amazing.

“Colin loved Christchurch and where they are going to put the plaque by one of trees was an area he loved to be. He went to volunteer at the sailing club and with so many things on the quay.

“Our daughter said to me this is exactly where he would want it to be by the river and the quay, we would take our grandson to the splash park.

“It is just incredible. He would be so proud to have this there.”

A short ceremony will begin at the bandstand at 12pm on Friday, September 9, before proceeding to the tree which stands next to the plaque.

The current mayor of Christchurch, town clerk and members of town council will be present for the short ceremony.
