BOURNEMOUTH University is pressing ahead with more changes and possible redundancies.

Almost 50 lecturer posts were lost last year with the university saying that only around 12 of the losses will be compulsory redundancies.

But an administrative review process' is just getting underway, and John Brissenden from the lecturers union UCU said he feared it could lead to more job losses.

Media lecturer John Brissenden, who was head of publicity for Sky TV from 1999 to 2003, said staff were confused and afraid.

He said: "I worked for Rupert Murdoch, who is not known as being a fluffy, touchy-feely employer, but I have never known anything like this.

"One thing I have heard is that a number of other universities are looking at Bournemouth with great interest.

"I think that what happens here could be seen elsewhere by the end of the decade."

Charles Elder, head of public relations for the university, said more meetings were planned with staff and vice chancellor Paul Curran had an open door policy'.

He said the administration review was about being more efficient and that if posts did go staff would mainly move around the university.

Mr Elder said: "I don't think management expect changes to go like clockwork but vice chancellor Curran is working very hard to engage people and not everyone will be happy.

"He is working hard to be as open as he can be but at the same time drive through changes.

"The university is moving towards a more traditional collegiate style and trying to engage more people."
