Godspell, Pavilion, Bournemouth

IT is 37 years since rock musical Godspell's Broadway debut but it remains a timeless, vibrant, thoroughly entertaining show.

While it is still essentially a story based around the parables from the Gospel of Matthew, Paul Kerryson's revamped production is infused with tremendous humour reflecting the age in which we live today, exploring the themes of love, compassion and integrity.

The Apostles, in skimpy costumes, including mini skirts and basques, break into impressions ranging from Tommy Cooper to Basil Fawlty, Gordon Brown to Elvis.

Biblical words of wisdom about building your house upon the rock include a witty play on words and reference to the Northern Rock fiasco. It sparkles and fizzes with surprise elements.

The topical and local references, for example, have The Good Samaritan living in Boscombe!

A young, yet highly talented cast brings boundless energy, enthusiasm and fun to the stage with a fresh faced Tom Bradley-one of the finalists from TV's Grease Is the Word last year, taking the lead role.

The music of composer Stephen Schwartz - who is still wowing audiences in the West End and Broadway with Wicked, remains uplifting and joyful.

From the rousing Prepare Ye to Day By Day you cannot help but clap and sing along.
