TWO paintings are expected to sell for thousands at an auction in Dorset next month.

A pair of old master paintings will be up for auction in the Chaterhouse auction in Sherborne, and are estimated to sell for between £8,000 and £10,000.

The oil paintings depict classical rural scenes, and are set in period carved giltwood frames.

They had been painted by Adriean van Diest, who at age 17, was employed the Earl of Bath to paint views and ruins of the West Country.

Richard Bromell at the Charterhouse said: “The paintings have been in the same titled family for many years and are quite an exciting discovery.

“Dating to the late 1600’s they are fairly typical of the art which was proudly displayed in country houses but which is rarely seen today.”

The pair of paintings will be in the Charterhouse for the auction on October 6 and 7.
