SUSTAINABLE travel works will see the closure of multiple roads in Poole this month as school’s begin the new academic year.
Various upgrades have already been made to the A35 Fernside Road and some intersecting roads as part of BCP Council’s Transforming Cities Fund travel route between Poole town centre to Ferndown and Wimborne.
The first phase of work saw the four-way junction where Fernside Road intersects with Hunt Road and St Mary’s Road undergo significant changes to improve safety for school children and pedestrians.
Improvements include:
- New toucan crossings on all arms of the four-way junction
- Dropped kerbs before and after all crossing points to allow people on bikes to cycle from the road to the crossings
- Resurfaced carriageway and pavements
- Additional wayfinding signs along St Mary’s Road
The latest phase of work at Garland Road began in late July and will see roads closed in early September, when the nearby Longfleet Primary School is due to reopen for the new academic year.
Sections of Garland Road will be closed from September 2 to 6 for resurfacing works.
The junction at Garland Road and Wimborne Road will be closed from September 2 to 4, and the Garland Road junction with Longfleet Road and St Mary’s Road will be closed from September 5 to 6.
Further improvements will take place at the junction with Joliffe Road – which houses the nearby entrance to Longfleet Primary School in Joliffe Avenue. While the school reopens fully on Monday, September 5, the works on Joliffe Road should be completed by September 4.
Works on the St Mary’s Road junction include:
- Installing a new mini roundabout
- Building a parallel crossing over Garland Road
- Road and pavement resurfacing
- Replacing the planter on the pedestrianised area of St Mary’s Road with a tree to allow cyclists and walkers to stay in line
Improvements in Garland Road at the junction with Joliffe Road, funded by the Local Transport Plan (LTP), includes:
- Installing a new ‘raised table’
- Installing a new zebra crossing on Garland Road
- Removing the existing refuge island on Joliffe Road and narrowing the carriageway
- Road and pavement resurfacing
Three-way temporary traffic signals will be in place in Garland Road for the duration of the works. Road diversions will be required for a short period at the start of September to allow the resurfacing to take place.
A BCP Council spokesperson said: “We’ve notified local residents and organisations in the vicinity and have installed road signs in advance of the closures. The new crossings being installed will provide safe crossing points and long-term benefits for the school and wider community, which we hope will encourage more people to walk, cycle and scoot to school and work.
“We thank everyone for their patience during these short term road closures.”
