AN animal charity is looking to home hens across Dorset.

The British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) is rehoming ex-commercial hens in 16 different locations across the UK next month, with over 4,000 hens hoping to find new homes.

Hens will be looking for homes across Dorset, with the charity set to host a rehoming in Bandford on Sunday, September 4.

Commercial laying hens are typically sent to slaughter at around 18 months old, which is where the BHWT steps in to rehome them as pets.

With more than 9,000 hens rehomed from Blandford, it has been branded a hugely successful area for the charity.

Charity founder, Jane Howorth MBE, said: “These hens are waiting patiently with their bags packed, hoping we’ll be on our way to pick them up and send them off to a back garden where they can dust bathe to their hearts’ delight.

“So, if you’ve got a particularly dusty flowerbed and aren’t precious about a hen turning it into a spa, we’d love to hear from you.”
