AMAZON has finally confirmed it will take tenancy at the brand-new warehouse being built in Poole after months of “rumour and speculation”.

In a move which will also see its existing Christchurch depot close, Amazon will begin operations at the new parcel distribution centre at Sterte Avenue West ahead of the busy Christmas period.

For months the Echo has reported on Amazon’s purported involvement at the site, however the global tech giant remained tight lipped on the plans – even after a concrete pump hire company described the site as the “eighth Amazon project we are proud to supply and service”.

However, after it applied for its signage to be erected on the warehouse, Amazon has since confirmed it will move from its existing depot near Bournemouth Airport and that no jobs will be lost as a result.

An Amazon spokesperson said: “We regularly review our network to ensure we are delivering for our customers and are relocating our Bournemouth delivery station to a new site in Poole.

“There will be no changes to the service we provide to our customers in this area and all employees will be relocated and continue with their roles at the new delivery station.”

Amazon also said the move will provide additional facilities to its relocating employees by offering increased parking, a spacious canteen and improved locker room facilities. There will be no change in current job numbers nor changes to any other terms and conditions of employment.

Touted to become “one of the largest” buildings in Poole when complete, the site area will cover 10.70 acres with its warehouse and office space covering 10,331m2.

Crews on site estimated the construction process would be finished in September.

The land, positioned between the A350 and railway line, was previously allocated in the Poole Local Plan for employment purposes.

BCP Council granted permission for the warehouse subject to a financial contribution from Amazon of £349,000 to be spent on one or more sites within the Poole Harbour catchment area to compensate for the loss of habitat on the land.
