Three people have been taken to hospital following a two car crash on a south Dorset A-road.

The crash took place near to The Red Lion, East Knighton just after 12.30pm.

Two people were taken to Dorset County Hospital with another airlifted to Southampton General Hospital.

Police closed the road, in Winfrith Newburgh, between Water Lane and Colehill Drive with motorists being urged to avoid the area.

A heavy emergency service presence responded to the incident with the air ambulance, police, fire service and land ambulance crews all in attendance.

One witness, Jamie, reported seeing “at least six police cars and three or four ambulances”.

A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 12.33hrs to a road traffic collision in the Winfrith Newburgh area.

"We sent three double-crewed land ambulances, an operations officer and an air ambulance.

"We conveyed two patients by land ambulance to Dorset County Hospital and one patient by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital

Speaking at the time of the incident, one witness said: "I was just sat at the pub and next thing I know a load of police cars went past and there's road closures in place. People are having to turn around and go in the other direction."
